Gmail keyboard shortcuts: the ones worth learning
Most of Gmail’s shortcuts are off until you turn them on. Here’s how, the ones worth knowing by heart, and a demo to practise them on, with the keys Dodosend adds where Gmail’s stop.
Turn on Gmail’s shortcuts
Gmail’s single-key shortcuts, like E to archive or J and K to move, wait for this setting. It stays with your account, so you only turn it on once.
- 01In Gmail on a computer, click Settings (the gear, top right), then See all settings.
- 02On the General tab, scroll down to Keyboard shortcuts.
- 03Select Keyboard shortcuts on.
- 04Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Why aren’t my Gmail keyboard shortcuts working?
Most of Gmail’s single-key shortcuts only work once Keyboard shortcuts on is selected in Settings, under See all settings. They also stay quiet while the cursor is in a text field, such as a reply or the search box, and a browser extension can take the same keys for itself.
How do I see every Gmail shortcut?
With shortcuts on, press ? (Shift and / on most keyboards) anywhere in Gmail, and it lists them all.
Are Gmail’s shortcuts the same on Mac and Windows?
Yes, except that ⌘ on a Mac stands in for Ctrl: ⌘+Enter sends on a Mac, Ctrl+Enter on Windows.
Does Dodosend use the same shortcuts as Gmail?
Mostly. C, /, E, R, F, S, Shift+I, Shift+U, Enter and ⌘/Ctrl+Enter do what they do in Gmail. The differences: the arrow keys move between conversations instead of J and K, Esc goes back instead of U, H sets a reminder where Gmail’s B snoozes, ⌘/Ctrl+Z undoes, Shift+R replies to all, and ! lists the shortcuts.
